Camshaft Bearing Cleaning and Replacement
Camshaft bearings which are crucial to engine functionality and performance because they control the intake and exhaust valves located inside the cylinder head. Obviously, they are quite important to the automobiles. Their proper function can maximize the vehicle efficiency, thus extend the service life of the car. Therefore, we should take measures to keep its proper performance.
The most common thing that we can do to maintain them is cleaning. You should clean the block and engine components surrounding the camshaft. Remove dirt and dust with a scrubbing pad. Then you can wipe loose dirt, oil and debris off the engine with a dry cloth, as these particles reduce the oil clearance and deform the camshaft bearings.
In addition to cleaning bearings when necessary, sometimes, you should replace the camshaft bearings. For example, if you experience shaking and vibration from the camshaft itself or you want to make some changes to the engine, you may have to replace them. The task of replacing camshaft bearings during an engine rebuild may appear to be an easy task, but the more intelligent approach is to handle the job with as much planning and precision as you would when replacing main or rod bearings. If not, your engine is likely to wind up with a damaged camshaft and/or main and rod bearings in a relatively short period of time.
According to the above, we can see that the replacement of the camshaft bearings requires our attention. Simply knocking out the old bearings and installing fresh ones with little regard to bearing selection, sizing, or alignment is a big mistake. Ill-fitting cam bearings can result in too little or too much oil clearance, which can damage both the camshaft and/or main and rod bearings. Thus, we should not ignore many related things.
There are various things to do when you replace the camshaft bearings. At first, you should remove the old, worn camshaft bearings using a camshaft bearing tool, and then select the appropriate expanding driver, correctly align it on the expander assembly and put the nylon cone over the driving bar, and screw the expander assembly into the driving bar.
After then, you may have to clean the replacement camshaft bearings and dry them with a cloth. Apply a thin coat of lubricating oil to all the components to protect them from rust.
Thirdly, you have to tighten the crankshaft caps before inserting the new bearings, using a torque wrench and clean the bore surfaces using a quick-dry solvent. Then you can begin installation of the camshaft bearings from the rear to the front of the block. Allow sufficient clearance between the camshaft and the bearing.
