When a gas is compressed, its temperature rises. It is not uncommon for a turbocharger to push air is 90 ° C (200 ° F). Some turbochargers use incredibly precise ball bearings that offer less friction of a fluid, but they are also suspended in a fluid dampened cavities. lower friction means turbo shaft can be made of lighter materials, reducing the so-called turbo lag or boost layer. Some car manufacturers use water cooled turbochargers for added bearing life.Turbochargers with foil bearings are being developed that eliminates the need for such delivery systems or cooling.
If you want to handle the pressure of the air upper deck, with turbocharger exhaust gas flowing through the wastegate bypass for more than regulating the exhaust gas entering the turbocharger turbine. This adjusts the speed of the compressor and turbine output. Wastegate open and close the compressed air to the turbo (the pressure of the upper deck) and can be lifted using a solenoid to regulate the pressure fed into the wastegate diaphragm. This solenoid can be controlled by Automatic Performance Control, the engine electronic control unit or the secondary market thrust control computer. Another way to increase boost pressure is through check valves and blood pressure to keep the film at low pressure within the system.
Some turbochargers use a set of vanes in the exhaust housing to maintain a constant rate of gas through the turbine, the same control that is used in power plant turbines. These turbochargers have a minimum of delay, a threshold on impulse, and are very effective at high rpm. In many configurations of these turbos do not even need a relief valve. The paddles are controlled by a membrane identical to that of a relief valve, but the level of control required is a little different. The first car manufacturer to use these turbos was the limited production 1989 Shelby CSX-VNT. Used a Garrett turbo, called the VNT-25 because it uses the same compressor and shaft as the more common Garrett T-25. This type is called variable geometry turbine (VNT). Aerocharger turbocharger manufacturer uses the term "section variable nozzle turbine (Vatn) to describe this type of turbine nozzle. Another common term is the variable turbine geometry.
