Interdependence and the Ford Model T
Henry Ford knew what he wanted when he set up his assembly lines for manufacturing the Model T back in 1908. He wanted a standardised product, mass-produced with the latest assembly line methods, and costing far less to make. He adopted methods he had observed in a meat packing plant. He also priced his cars keenly – to reflect his actual production costs and economies of scale.
Everything had to be modified or designed for the speed of his mass production. You could buy a Model T in any colour you liked, so long as it was black, this because Japanese black enamel was the only paint then known that could dry fast enough to keep up with the rate of production.
But Henry had another big idea, one that is less well known. He paid his workers well. $5 a day was an unheard-of figure when it came to factory workers, but Henry paid it and considered it a good investment. Why?
It allowed employees at his plants to buy his cars. More sales leads to even more success. More success, more employment, more prosperity. For the first time, the automobile became inexpensive enough for the working man to buy, instead of a plaything for the rich or well-off. A whole new market was created.
And the rest of the auto industry had to adapt – and quickly – or be pushed into bankruptcy. Middle-priced cars, even high-priced cars, now had a new competitor, one that could deliver almost as much car for so much less price. The automobile game changed in the United States from 1909 to about 1914, as all manufacturers sought to cut their prices by mass-production methods and by standardising models. This process took place in Europe and Great Britain after World War I.
What Henry Ford had done was become wealthy by making a more affordable product and significantly, by sharing his profits with both his workers and his customers. He could have priced his Model T at the then going rate for light cars, which was about $1,000. Instead he priced under it – initially at $850, then eventually all the way down to $250 as his production lines grew in output and his costs per car dropped.
By paying his workers higher wages, he was creating a market for his cars. By maintaining a certain level of profit and passing on his savings to his consumers, he was again creating a market for his cars. And his market share increased enormously.
How different it is today!
Greedy corporations want profits at the expense of both their customers and their workers. Here's how: let's say you make computer monitors in your United States plant. It's close to transport hubs, your workforce is semi-skilled but trained for the job and your materials costs are known and predictable. You are forced to charge a certain price in order to make a profit, but your products are good and have reasonable market share.
Now comes a free trade agreement and the opportunity to cut costs by moving your manufacturing plant to another country – say Mexico. You set up a plant in an impoverished area there and employ a local work force. You pay them a lot less, because their cost of living is less, and in the supply and demand market of employment, you have the upper hand.
They work under conditions less safe than those back home in the US. Your plant pollutes the local environment much more than it could at home, but it's all still legal. You now have your product – a computer monitor – ready for the consumer, and you've made it for a fraction of what it would have cost you at home. But here's the thing – you decide to price it at the same retail amount as before and keep the whopping extra profits that result.
You get a lot richer of course, and also decide to increase profits still further by closing down your factory at home. Your workers are laid off and left to find employment elsewhere. You don't care – you have your massive profits.
But your ex-workers and their families now have a great deal less spending power. They are focussed on surviving their debt crisis. They cut back on all sorts of discretionary spending until they can get back on their economic feet again. So they won't be buying a new computer monitor anytime soon. The old one will do for a bit longer.
The poor workers in Mexico that you employ to make all your monitors are still poor, relatively speaking. You have paid them only what they might expect to earn from any other local employer. They're employed at least, but certainly not wealthy enough to even consider non-essential luxuries like a home computer. Or a monitor. So they won't be buying your products either.
So who buys your products?
That's not your problem – there are always other consumers in the United States that have good jobs and earn enough to buy your monitors at the same old retail level. But if this same scenario is repeated across a wide range of industries, the pool of consumers and their means will only shrink and continue to do so. Your market – let alone your market share – shrinks, and with it so does your business and so do your profits. It's not just the other guy's problem. It's yours.
If instead, lower production costs are passed on to the consumer as lower prices, there is more sharing of wealth (rather than hoarding of wealth) and therefore more general prosperity. Increasingly, science and other disciplines of learning are admitting that interdependence is the natural order of things. Nature is all about a dynamic balance. Complicated systems collapse when dominated by any one factor.
Henry Ford understood interdependence. He grew up on a farm and watched nature at work. He knew that he could prosper if he could help other people to do so.
