An In-depth Look at Live Axle Suspensions
When live axle suspensions are discussed nowadays, they are viewed as archaic designs that have no place in today's world. While this may be true for cars and now, mid-size SUVs, live axle suspensions still have their place in commercial trucks and with serious off roaders, to the point that the off roaders who frequent rocky and muddy terrain convert the independent front suspensions on their vehicles to live axle designs that offer constant ground clearance and strength.
Basically, a live axle suspension is made up of housing with a differential in the centre. Inside the housing are the driveshafts that connect to the wheel hubs. In turn, a propeller shaft connects the differential and transmission, with the play being taken up by a yoke and universal joint arrangement. Suspension types for suspending and locating the live axle vary. The earliest type of live axle suspension is the Hotchkiss design. It locates the live axle suspension via leaf springs which are connected by shackles to the vehicle's frame or the car unibody. While leaf springs have gone the way of the dinosaur in most, if not all, modern cars, large pickups and commercial vehicles still use this design up to today. This very simple design of the leaf spring supporting the vehicle's weight is a direct adaptation of the suspension that horse-drawn buggies employed before the invention of the automobile. Experimentation with shock location has somewhat alleviated the shortcomings of this design, but in no way allow the Hotchkiss design to compete with more modern suspensions.
In the desire to better control the movement of a live axle suspension, suspension engineers came up with the multilink design for locating a live axle rear suspension. As its name implies, a multilink design controls the movement of a live axle in the horizontal and longitudinal axes. While the four-link live axle suspension is the most commonly seen type of multilink design for a live axle, there are also three-link and torque arm variations that see use in automobiles. Changing link lengths, orientation and placement all affect the characteristics of the live axle suspension but certain link placements and orientations have been proven to provide the best combination of handling predictability and ride quality. Whatever number of links are used, live axle suspensions also need a Panhard rod or Watts linkage to laterally control the movement of the axle. Despite the advent of more complicated designs that provide another level of ride and handling quality, live axle suspensions will still see use in a variety of applications for the foreseeable future, particularly where strength and simplicity are major factors in considering the type of suspension to use.
