Shaking Up The NFL Draft
So as all NFL fans had probably been doing, I had been following the labor situation. It seemed the players were happy with the current deal and the owners wanted more money. And now they are at a stand still with no more football in the future except the NFL Draft, which is right around the corner. So I came up with an idea that could save the owners money while making the NFL draft more dynamic and, in my opinion more fun to watch for the fans.
As we all know the team with the worst regular season record gets the first pick in the draft. Sometimes that is a great thing to have. The Carolina Panthers could have been drafting Andrew Luck this year. In most, if not all analyst's, opinions he is a franchise changing quarterback and more than worthy of the overall number one pick in the draft, financially worthy also. I'm sure any owner would have no problem paying him the money the first pick commands.
Now that Luck didn't declare there isn't a clear-cut overall number one. Depending on the draft board you follow or look at it is now AJ Green, Cam Newton, Marcell Dareus, or Da'Quan Bowers. Are any of those players franchise changing? Are they worthy of first pick money? I don't have the answer for that nor does anybody else. Who knows maybe Andrew Luck is a bust. Only time will tell.
One thing I'm pretty sure the owners are tired of is drafting these unproven college players, giving them these huge guaranteed money contracts, and not getting anything from them, ever! À la JaMarcus Russell, Tim Couch, Ryan Leaf, Courtney Brown, Akili Smith, Alex Smith, the list could go on forever. Certainly this list contains numerous quarterbacks. There was actually discussion of the colts taking Leaf over Peyton Manning, and what would have come of Aaron Rodgers if the 49′ers would have drafted him instead of Smith?
Now think of the money the owners end up investing in unproven players by having one of the top picks in consecutive years. Then if one or all of the players picked are busts, or they don't live up to the potential of the pick and the money that was spent on them. This is one reason I'm in total agreement of having a rookie salary cap. Nobody should get a mega million dollar contract without proving themselves at the next level. Not even Andrew Luck.
Take into perspective some of the horrible draft runs in fairly recent history. The Cincinnati Bengals from 1992-1995 drafted David Klingler, John Copeland, Dan Wilkinson, and Ki-Jana Carter, with picks 6, 5, 1, and 1, respectively. Klingler never threw for over 2,000 yards in a season, and only threw over 600 yards in a season twice. He also never threw more than 6 TD's in a season. John Copeland was a starter for 7 seasons in Cincinnati, but surely didn't live up to being a #5 overall pick. Dan Wilkinson didn't have a bad career. But considering who the Bengals could have drafted, Marshall Faulk (Hall of Famer) or Willie McGinest (4 Super Bowls, 3 Rings), was he worth the money paid for the overall #1. And Ki-Jana Carter who never ran for over 500 yards in a season and only totaled a little over 1,100 for a career. He was definitely not overall #1 worthy.
The Cleveland Browns in 1999-2001. 1999, Tim Couch #1 overall, when they could have had Donovan McNabb, Edgerrin James, Ricky Williams, Torry Holt, Champ Bailey, Daunte Culpepper, or Jevon Kearse. In 2000 drafted Courtney Brown, and could have drafted Chris Samuels, Jamal Lewis, Brian Urlacher, John Abraham, Julian Peterson, Shaun Alexander, or even Tom Brady. In 2001, Gerard Warren, could have hadLaDainian Tomlinson, Richard Seymour, Steve Hutchinson, Reggie Wayne, or even Drew Brees.
Now some of the alternative players listed were probably not at a position they were trying to fill that particular year. Or according to scouts and draft experts to take, lets say, Daunte Culpepper #1 overall would have been reaching and wouldn't provide the right "value" for that pick, even though he might have been #1 on the Browns draft board for QB's, and maybe they couldn't get a worthy trade down.
So lets take this years draft into a scenario. The Carolina Panthers have the overall #1 pick and were hyped to be able to pick Andrew Luck, until Luck didn't declare. Now maybe they would like to shore up the O line for Jimmy Clausen instead of reaching and overpaying for Cam Newton or Blaine Gabbert. No draft board has an Offensive Lineman going in the top 10. So do the Panthers reach? Do they draft somebody that they aren't totally sold on? Or do they draft someone for a position that they really don't need to fill? What if nobody wants to trade up to the top pick this year because there isn't that must have guy and the second or third player at that position could be just as good?
Up here in Seattle on the local sports show Brock & Salk, on KIRO 710AM ESPN Seattle, it was debated if the Seattle Seahawks should trade their entire draft to get to #1 so they could draft Luck. Some people were all for it. He was the "must have guy". Now the #1 pick doesn't have the same value. So the Panthers could be stuck shelling out a contract on a player that they really don't want.
So here is where my idea comes into play. Let Carolina choose where they draft. Let them choose to pick 10th overall so they're not reaching so far for that OT they might want and not having to pay 1st overall contract money on a "not so sure thing". Then let Denver choose where they want to draft, and so on.
This adds a whole new dynamic to an already exciting draft. It adds a lot of strategy. Since the Panthers chose to pick 10th does another team choose to pick 9th so they can essentially steal the player the Panthers were targeting? It would be about choosing to pick where you would get a good value for your pick, and not reach too far, and the price that the pick would command in a contract.
Also you may run across this dream scenario. Say the St. Louis Rams have a terrible season. Still no weapons for Sam Bradford, the defense just falls apart, and the Cardinals and 49′ers come up with worthy veteran QB's and dominate the conference. The Rams end up with the worst record. Andrew Luck declares for the draft. Obviously the Rams have their QB situation under control. But they could still take the #1 overall pick and start a bidding war for Luck.
Who knows? Maybe the Rams end up with two #1's and a 2nd rounder too. Or better. Maybe the Seahawks trade their whole draft for the pick! The possibilities could be limitless. Maybe the Colts make the trade and have Peyton Manning's heir apparent, and continue their winning ways without a hiccup.
Now with the current draft rules as they are a team could in theory slip back to the pick they wanted. If a team doesn't get their pick to the podium in time then the next team can hurry in with their pick and draft in that spot. Then the next team could do the same, and so on, until the first team gets their pick in. This occurred in the 2003 draft, when the Minnesota Vikings, with the 7th overall pick, were late with their selection. The Jacksonville Jaguars drafted quarterback Byron Leftwich and the Carolina Panthers drafted offensive tackle Jordan Gross before the Vikings were able to submit their selection of defensive tackle Kevin Williams. Maybe not a huge loss, or a loss at all, depending on how you look at it. To avoid this occurrence, and make things a bit more interesting, the rule could be changed so if a team doesn't get their pick in on time they drop all the way to the end of the round. Pick 32! What an incentive to get their pick in.
There may be other rules that may need to be tweaked a little to make this work, but it seems like an interesting idea none the less. Let me know what you think, what else could be done, or any other comments or suggestions.
