How our muscles work
The human body contains over 215 pairs of skeletal muscles, making up approximately 40% of our total weight. Skeletal muscles get their name from the fact that they attach to and move our skeleton; they are what make our bodies move. Skeletal muscles are what most people visualise when talking about muscles, although two further types of muscles also exist in our bodies:
Smooth muscles: these are sometimes referred to as involuntary muscles as we are unable to move them ourselves. It cannot be built up like skeletal muscle, and is often part of the make-up of our internal organs, and even blood vessels. Smooth muscle can be found in the walls of organs such as the stomach and oesophagus, and in the walls of our blood vessels. They work without us having to consciously make a decision.
Cardiac muscle: These are muscles we often forget (or in some cases are even unaware) we have. They are found solely in our heart and are what keep it beating. Our cardiac muscle does not get tired but the continuous blood supply means the heart keeps working and working.
Athletes, health specialists, and most of the general public, however, are referring to skeletal muscles when talking generally. Each skeletal muscle, by and large, has one main artery which supplies it with blood, and therefore nutrients, and several veins which help eliminate metabolic waster and toxins. Each individual muscle is made up of hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of muscle fibres, which are all grouped together and wrapped in a connective tissue called the epimysium.
Skeletal muscles come in a variety of shapes, depending completely on the function and action of that particular area. The four main shapes include: parallel (long thin muscles), pennate (tear-drop shaped), convergent (triangular) and circular. The origin of the muscle is where the muscle is attached, by tendons, to the bone; it is the less moveable part of the muscle. The insertion, on the other hand, is where the movement of the muscle happens. To help visualise this action you might like to think of a bicep curl, for example, one part of the muscle stays in a fixed position while the other end moves towards the origin.
Muscle movement can be broken down into three types of contractions: concentric (when the muscle shortens), eccentric (increases tension on a muscle as it stretches) and static (opposing muscles contract against each other). In many activities all three types of muscle movement will be at play simultaneously, producing a smoothly, co-ordinated movement. Most bodily movement involves one end of the skeletal muscle remaining still while the attachment at the other end moves.
If you are looking to get really technical, skeletal muscles can be classified further into two separate groups: stabilisers (which help stabilise a joint) and mobilisers (which are responsible for movement). It is worth bearing in mind however, if it doesn't confuse the matter, that all skeletal muscles can be either stabilisers or/and mobilisers, it really comes down to the action and position of the muscle/body.
