Pick Pack and Ship: Three Magic Words in Mail Order
There are three magic words that can change the fortune of any mail order business: pick pack, and ship. The more efficiently and accurately a business can accomplish these things, the happier their customers will be, and the more business (and its profits) will grow. As your business grows and product demand increases, however, it will become harder and harder to keep up with shipping demands. This leaves you with the choice of hiring dedicated employees for shipping (which means footing the labor costs, often even when the additional employees are not needed) or dividing the attention of personnel who have other tasks to accomplish.
A better solution is available to mail order businesses. By using a fulfillment warehouse, you do more than just get rid of unnecessary building and labour expenses. You hire a team of experts who understand shipping and handling inside out. Why waste precious time having someone multitask when you could have workers specifically trained to efficiently and accurately pick pack and ship your merchandise whenever you need them? You can clearly see that fulfillment centers give you the best of both worlds. By using a fulfillment warehouse you ensure that your stock is handled by a team of experts while eliminating your warehousing costs at the same time.
Fulfillment warehouses specialize in streamlining the whole shipping process. This adds up to savings for them, which in turn leads to savings for you. Not only do they prevent down time for staff by servicing larger number of companies' shipping requirements, but they generally also train their workers to specialize in particular tasks in the shipping process. Much as Henry Ford's assembly line streamlined the process of making automobiles and brought down the manufacturing costs enough that average people could afford to buy them, the fulfillment warehouse, by assigning personnel to particular jobs such as pick pack and ship, makes the whole process more efficient, saving costs for everyone.
Employees in a fulfillment warehouse basically perform two roles; pick & pack. Pickers are trained specifically to look at your order manifests, find the bins or internal Skua containing the appropriate items, pull the items required, and prepare them to be shipped. The picker then turns the items over to a second specialized employee, who continues the shipping process from there. He or she then sets about selecting the subsequent order.
Packers confirm that all of the items on the manifest have been collected, providing you with an extra pair of eyes to make sure that nothing has been missed (and potentially saving you and your customers some aggravation). After confirming that all items are present and correct, the packer carries out the packaging process, which typically includes adding a packing slip. Finally, the packer will label the package accordingly, including its destination address and any special instructions concerning the shipping of the package. Professional packers understand when packages should be labeled handle with care or fragile, and taking those concerns out of your hands.
Fulfillment centers will then ship your products out to the buyer. This is usually done through a major delivery service, like UPS and FedEx. Another benefit of using a fulfillment warehouse is that they ship in much larger bulk than you do, providing for lower shipping rates, which are passed along to you.
