Cowboy Boots--How a Cowboy Boot is Constructed
As a custom cowboy bootmaker I often hear, "Oh, you make boots from the bottom up." Whether a boot is built in a one-person shop like mine or in a large factory the order of construction is the same. Cowboy boots, like all footwear, are constructed from the top down.
The most common style of cowboy boot is the four piece construction. The top of the boot is the part that extends up the leg. It is formed by two pieces—a front panel and a back panel. The vamp is the foot part that extends over the toe and the counter cover is the piece that wraps around the heel.
A pair of boots requires two front panels, two back panels, two vamps and two counter covers. The tops and vamps are lined with soft lining leather. The counter is a firm, thick piece of leather that supports the heel area and it is hidden by the counter cover.
All of the decorative work on a pair of cowboy boots is done before these pieces are put together. If there is multi-row stitching or intricate inlay or overlay on the tops it is all done while the four separate panels (two fronts, two backs) are flat. Once the boots are constructed it is too late to go back and alter these design details.
After the decorative work is complete on the tops it is time to begin putting the pieces together. The vamps are sewn onto the front panels and the counter and counter covers are sewn onto the back panels. The resulting front and back sections are stitched together at the side seams. The side seams are stitched right sides together so the boot is inside-out. Next the boots are turned so the right side is out, and the pulls are attached.
Meanwhile the last has been chosen and the insole tacked to the bottom and shaped. The last is the wooden or plastic form around which the boot is built; it does not become a part of the boot. The chosen last determines the size of the boot, the width and the heel height. The insole is the surface your foot sits on inside the boot. Its shape is determined by the shape of the bottom of the last.
At this point it is time to begin putting the boot together. The boots are lasted—the last is inserted into the foot area of the boot and the vamps and counters are wrapped tightly around the last and tacked into place. In the toe area the lining is pulled over the last and the vamp leather is pulled back. The toe box, the stiffener that holds the toe shape, is placed over the lining. Then the vamp leather is pulled over the toe box so it is hidden inside between the vamp and vamp lining.
Next the boots are inseamed. The welt is a narrow strip of leather that is sewn to the boot through the insole from just behind the ball area and around the toe. This seam is called the inseam. The shank, a narrow piece of steel that supports the arch area, is put into place and covered by a leather piece.
Now it is time for the sole. The sole, the walking surface of the boot, is cemented to the bottom of the boot and stitched to the boot through the welt. It's pegged or tacked into place in the arch area. Once the sole is attached and stitched the heel is added. The heel is composed of several layers of heavy leather and finished with a rubber heel cap. Finally the last is pulled out of the boot and the boots are shined and polished.
