Lubrication Methods for Sealed Bearings
It is known to all that bearing products can be made use of to meet various requirements. And there are many categories. Except for some common types, the sealed bearings also deserve our attention.
Sealed bearings or non-serviceable bearings have a teflon or rubber seal that is designed to keep dust, water and other elements out of the bearing case. They prevent the escaping of lubricant from the rolling elements as well as protect them from outside contamination.
It is no doubt that they also have a wide range of applications, and they are most popular in automobile industry. Besides, they can also commonly be seen in day-to-day accessories such as a ceiling fan and a bicycle.
The sealed feature of this kind of bearing product shields the bearings from pollution and thus prevents their premature failures. Most of you may think that they do not require maintenance at all; however, it is a wrong concept. Generally, they offer low maintenance and long life for many applications. They also need maintenance to extend their service life. One way to extend the life of sealed bearings is lubrication.
Because lubricants can wear out through use or dry out over time, you should lubricate sealed bearings regularly to ensure their proper function. Two main methods of getting lubrication into the sealed bearings can be adopted.
The first method is injecting the lubrication under pressure or vacuum. You can place the bearing in a small container filled with lubricant, and place the container with the lubricant and bearing into a vacuum container. Then you can apply a vacuum which will evacuate air inside the sealed bearing. After that, you should release the vacuum. Allow air to re-enter the vacuum chamber which will cause the lubricant to seep into the sealed bearing.
The second method is disassembling the bearing. At first, you should take the bearing apart. Use properly fitting wrenches to take the cap off the bearing races. There will be rubber flanges that interlock to hold the lubricant in. Adjustable bearings will have two screw caps--one is to adjust the spacing for the bearings, the other is to lock the first cap in place. Then you should clean the bearing and its races with a soft cloth or paper towel. After then, you can put in as much lubricant as the bearing will hold. Of course, the lubricant is appropriate for the sealed bearings. When you finish lubricating, you can reassemble the bearing at last.
