Educational Toys And Children's Books - A Must For Optimal Childhood Development

The brightly colored plastic mobile dangles lazily overhead in the infant's crib. The baby coos as its tiny arms swing a rattle back and forth. In another room a pre-school youngster is busy assembling the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle and upstairs a teen is conquering worlds on a computerized video game. What do all of these activities have in common? They are examples of children playing with educational toys.

It seems that a home with children is a home full of toys. Parents want children to have happy, healthy childhoods. Toys are a big part of growing up. But, with stores filled with toys and games many parents begin to question which of these toys are appropriate and which toys will help their children develop normally? These are good questions.

There is no doubt that toys are a normal part of childhood. Kids have played with toys of some kind for as long as there have been children. It is also quite true that toys play a significant role in the development of the child. The types of toys with which a child plays often have a strong influence on the child's adult interests and behavior.

Play consumes a large portion of a child's time each day. It is during this play that children learn some fundamental lessons not only about themselves, but also about other people and the world around them. It is through play they develop physically, mentally and emotionally. Play is essential to the child's development.

Educational toys are tools of play designed to develop motor skills, cognitive powers and emotions. Other toys may simply be fun. Too often, the label 'educational' is attached to toys regardless whether or not the toy was actually designed to 'teach' the child a skill or ability. Sometimes the term is used as a marketing gimmick to command a higher price.

So, how does a parent know if a toy is actually an educational toy? The answer to that question is to understand what the toy is designed to teach or accomplish.

Children learn best when learning is fun. Children learn at a very early stage to do those things that they enjoy and to avoid activities that are not enjoyable. Nearly every parent wants to believe that his or her child is special, that they are developing mentally or physically at a faster pace than other children. There is often a temptation to overburden the child with toys that are beyond the child's stage of development, or to concentrate on toys that stretch the child's skills. The truth is that there must be a balance between cognitive development toys, skills-based toys and toys that are simply 'fun' or relatively effortless to use. Pushing a child too strenuously can be just as damaging to development as not providing sufficient stimulation.

The plastic mobile dangling above the crib is an important aid in helping the infant learn to first focus its vision and then to distinguish between shapes and colors. The rattle helps the baby learn to identify and determine the source of sounds. Shaking the rattle develops coordinated movement. Both the mobile and the rattle are educational toys. The mobile is a cognitive development toy and the rattle is a skill-based toy.

Examples of other cognitive development toys include jigsaw puzzles, word puzzles, flash cards, drawing sets, painting sets, modeling clay, chemistry and science lab sets, telescopes, microscopes, educational software, some computer games, some video games and children's books. These toys are labeled with the age range of the child for which they are designed. These are the toys that teach children to identify, make choices and reason. Smart parents will make sure their child or children are given toys appropriate for their age range.

Skill-based toys include building blocks, tricycles, bicycles, bats, balls, sports equipment, Legos, erector sets, Lincoln logs, stuffed animals, dolls, crayons and finger paints. These toys teach children the relationships between different sizes and shapes and how to assemble, color and paint. All of these activities are important for developing fine motor skills and increasing physical abilities.

Child safety is an important consideration in the selection of skill-based toys. Toys inappropriate for the child's age or development may create a safety hazard. For example, babies and toddlers should not have access to toys such as bow and arrow sets, BB guns, toys with sharp edges or corners, small parts or substances that may be swallowed or electrical toys.

With the array of toys available in department stores and stores such as Toys R Us, Babies R Us, parents can become overwhelmed with the choices that confront them. Here are some simple guidelines to help parents make appropriate choices for their children.

Does the toy have sensory attraction? Toys with high levels of sensory attraction stimulate all children. This includes color, sound, texture and movement

How is the toy activated? Toys should be fun and challenging, yet should not be frustrating to use

Does the toy stimulate self-expression? Toys should allow the child to be creative and express her or himself

Will the child feel successful with the toy? Children must feel a significant level of success when using the toy

Is it a popular toy? Media such as TV and other children influence a child's desire for a particular toy or type of toy. Children seek to identify with peers and will be more inclined to play with toys they perceive are popular with children their age

Does the toy provide opportunities for you to interact with the child? It is important that you spend time playing with your child

Does the toy reflect the child's interests? Children are continually developing and their interests changing. Children will be more satisfied in playing with toys that reflect their current interests

Is the toy safe and durable? Safety and durability are important considerations in choosing toys

Choosing appropriate educational toys is important. These guidelines and recognition of the skill, cognitive ability or emotion the toy is designed to develop are important to the success of the toy in helping your youngster develop normally through each succeeding stage of his or her childhood.

Finally, one of the most important aspects in selecting and using educational toys is you. You are an integral part of your child's development. The toys you select should provide opportunities for you to interact with your child as he or she plays. This time you spend playing with your child is invaluable, not only in developing strong bonds between the two of you, but also in your ability to gauge your child's level of development and current interests. With these things in mind your child will be a long way down the road of a happy, healthy and normal childhood.

Books Review : Mademoiselle De Maupin

 Published in 2 volumes in 1835, this ground breaking book cause much ado in 19th century France. Describing the plight of the Chevalier d’Albert in his quest for the perfect woman and combining the escapades of the historic figure, Madeline de Maupin.

D’Albert is tormented by his unattainable ideal of the perfect woman and settles for the beautiful but second best widow, Rosette. During a holiday at her family Chateau, d’Albert finally meets his vision of beauty and falls head over heels in love but only to discover the vision is male!

Madeline de Maupin leaves home at 17 years of age on a quest to discover the truth about men and their real thoughts on women. To succeed in this quest she assumes the clothes and pursuits of men, pursuits including the seduction and wooing of young women. But will her quest for the true nature of men lead her to love? How will d’Albert reconcile with his perfect love being male? And what is the history between Rosette and the handsome horseman, Theodore?

This historic novel was considered ground breaking in its time for the themes it addressed so openly, homosexuality, gender roles, cross dressing and the idea that women too have desires and ideas on their love life. D’Albert has the soul of an artist and as so his descriptions are epic in detail whereas de Maupin’s story is short and to the point. This contrast in narration is intended as a reflection of the characters telling their tales. Overall an interesting story giving a glimpse of 18th century rural life.

With prospects in the Red Wine district that are geologically similar to well known Canadian rare earth projects, Rare Earth Metals Inc (TSXV:RA) is poised to capitalize on the supply shortage of rare earth metals following changes in Chinese export regulations. The company's President and CEO, Michael Stares and the Vice President of Exploration, Reg Felix speak with Resource Intelligence about their exciting prospects on the Red Wine Project in Labrador.


Resource Intelligence: Rare Earth Metals Inc. has both coal and rare earth metal, which one is the company's priority at this time?

Michael Stares & Reg Felix: Of course the main priority of the company is to find and drill off a rare earth deposit. The coal asset was inherited through the merger that was completed last year when the company was formed. We are currently trying to find a home for this project and in doing so adding as much shareholder value as possible.

RI: Which project are you most focused on?

MS & RF: We're focused on the Two Tom prospect on our Red Wine Project in Labrador.

RI: Could you tell us about the results you're getting from that project?

MS & RF: That's a very exciting project. In September we drilled 11 diamond drill holes on the Two Tom prospect. The prospect is drilled off on 200m centers for approximately 1.1km. From our drilling to date, it looks like the average thickness of that particular zone is 80m and the grade would about 1.18% total rare earth oxides.

RI: Are those heavy or light rare earths?

MS & RF: They are predominantly light rare earths. However, our other prospects called the Dory Pond occurrence and the South Playfair occurrences have a really good heavy rare earth oxide proportion of the total rare earth oxide content.

RI: What else is encouraging about Red Wine?

MS & RF: We're in a geological environment that is highly prospective for rare earth elements. We're dealing with alkaline intrusions and geologically these could probably be correlated to the type of environment that Quest is working with up in Strange Lake and Avalon is working with in Thor Lake. Secondly, we have five historic rare metal showings, which have been documented by the government. We've been able to outline mineralized zones in the Two Tom and the Mann#1 that have very exciting strike lengths to them. However, we also have in the southwest area of this large holding, highly prospective zones to explore. To date, through prospecting and sampling we've demonstrated heavy rare earth oxide compositions. We're going to focus on those to come up with some exciting zones of heavy rare earth in addition to the predominantly light rare earths we already have. So we probably have an underdeveloped, undervalued belt because we're probably the first people who have really looked at it for rare earth metal mineralization.

RI: As you know we are expecting a rare earth metal supply shortage because of Chinese export regulations. Could you comment on how that may affect your project?

MS & RF: It's going to be positive in every respect. When you look at what the Chinese have been doing in the last few months with their export restrictions, they are really telling the rest of the world that they have to find new deposits. 97% of the world's rare earths are developed in China and China currently consumes about 60% domestically, and they're telling us now that their domestic demands are going to increase. There has been speculation that within five years the Chinese themselves are going to be importing rare earth metals to feed its growing economy.

RI: Are you currently working on the Clay-Howells rare earth project in Ontario as well?

MS & RF: Yes, we're drilling on the Clay Howell project right now. With any luck we'll have some good news from that project and that will be good news for the company going forward as well.

RI: How well is Rare Earth Metals Inc financed to proceed with exploration plans?

MS & RF: Our company is well financed. We have just over $8 million in the treasury. We have a burn rate of about $80,000-$90,000 per month, and basically we have lots of money in the bank to fund both our projects.

RI: Do you believe you are currently getting shareholder value for your projects?

MS & RF: Our market cap today is $32 million. If you compare other rare earth companies in the sector with similar assets and share structures as Rare Earth Metals, we believe there is a lot of room to add shareholder value.

RI: What is the company doing to address shareholder value?

MS & RF: When we do outline a resource at the Two Tom and complete a 43-101, that will help our share price for sure.

RI: Any idea of the time frame for the 43-101?

MS & RF: We're probably looking at another 12 months. Realistically, it will probably be the first quarter 2012 before we see a 43-101.

RI: Is there anything else you'd like to add?

MS & RF: Our projects have great infrastructure and I believe this will have a very positive effect on the future of our potential deposits there.

Out Rare

China's Rare Earth Metals Monopoly Could Surpass America

I can describe America's impending decline as a world power in one word -- Alvin.

No, not the squeaky chipmunk.

This is no laughing matter. America's mounting deficits and lack of political leadership have allowed a once-great nation to fall steadily behind China -- the country that holds more than $1 trillion of our debt.

And nowhere is this shifting balance of power more apparent than in the global geopolitical showdown over rare earth metals.

You may recall that China controls roughly 97% of all rare earths produced in the world. These metals remain critical for the high-powered magnets essential to U.S. military superiority. Think missile guidance systems.

Rare earths also serve as the backbone for a wide range of civilian technology. We're talking fiber optics, wind turbines and smartphones. The world is on the verge of what I see as a rare-earth buying panic.

No wonder that at American Wealth Underground, our rare-earth holdings are doing so well. We recently took combined gains of 250% on several positions.

That kind of action is why we recently entered a stake in Europe's largest rare-earth deposit. We also have a position in the leading publicly traded rare-earth processor. Half its sales come from China.

Meantime, my analysis of the rare earths markets shows that within the next three years China will need all the rare earths it produces.

China has until now used its rare-earth monopoly to good effect. The government has pressured U.S. and other firms to locate factories in China to gain rare-earth access.

More than jobs are at stake as American firms head overseas.

The Chinese have a well-documented history of stealing intellectual property from anybody they can.

Now comes the Alvin. It illustrates how America is losing its technological superiority to China with grave consequences for our future.

Don't worry if you don't immediately recall the Alvin.

It's a craft U.S. scientists used to make a critical undersea discovery in 1979. At that time, the Alvin ruled the deep seas -- a submersible that could dive deeper than any other craft.

Our team found vents spewing superheated fluids from the ocean floor off the coast of Mexico. These were no ordinary updrafts. They contained a mixture of important metals: gold, silver, lead, copper and zinc.

Since that time, our nation's ability to explore the deep oceans for metals has steadily declined. You'll never guess who is the new deep-sea diving champion...

China, with Japan right on its tail.

Just last week, the Chinese were set to launch a craft known as the Jialong. It can dive to a depth of 16,400 feet -- more than three miles.

That puts huge swaths of valuable minerals within the craft's range.

Here's where the interplay between China and Japan gets tricky. The Pentagon buys critical components containing rare earths from Japan. In turn that country gets its rare earths directly from China.

Just a few weeks ago, the Japanese made a critical rare-earth find. They discovered a massive deposit at depths of two to 3 3/4 miles below the ocean's surface.

This was reported in the British journal Nature Geoscience. The publication didn't delve into global politics.

So allow me.

The Japanese found the deep-sea rare earths near Hawaii, which helps explain why China wants to curtail the U.S. Navy's Pacific operations.

China has strong international backing for the Jialong's mission. It can explore the space between Hawaii and the U.S. mainland. All thanks to the International Seabed Authority, a unit of our "friends" at the United Nations.

These developments underscore key themes in what we call the Era of Gold 3.0, the term used to describe how planet Earth has passed the natural resources tipping point.

All the easy, affordable natural resources have been discovered. From here on out it's tough slogging in remote and expensive regions of the world.

Global population growth and surging technology demand will continue to put pressure on natural resources across the board. Rare earths remain at the top of the list.

Ironically, Alaska's Arctic region holds vast deposits of oil, gas, precious metals and rare earths. Other nations are investing in the Arctic.

But U.S. leaders are sitting on their hands... as usual.

From here it gets even worse. China will in all likelihood win the rare-earth ocean race. The implications are more profound than I have enumerated so far.

Here's why.

We have abandoned our Moon program and space exploration. But China's deep-sea program has enormous space implications.

You see, underwater mining will rely heavily on robotics. So will mining in outer space.

Don't laugh.

Apollo astronauts brought back lunar soil samples that proved the Moon is chock-full of rare earths.

Scientists also believe thousands of asteroids cheaper to land on than the Moon may also contain rare-earth deposits. Here in the U.S. we lack the political will to connect the dots between the ocean floor and outer space.

But you can bet the Chinese are eager to do it.

Robotic craft operating on the ocean floor face formidable challenges. The same type of hurdles they would face on what are called Near Earth Asteroids.

And to think, the U.S. once held a clear lead in the Space Race.

Now, the Apollo moon program has much in common with the Alvin. They are symbols of China's rising power and the death of American superiority.
