The official beginning of the 2009 holiday shopping season is only a few weeks away. Major toy and retail stores have started to announce their 'Hot Toys' lists; the toys and games that will be on many kids' wish lists this season. With today's challenging economy, the prices of many kids' toys are being reduced to draw in more customers. One recent survey showed that many consumers will be starting their holiday shopping a bit earlier this year to make their money stretch further.

Do Crossword Puzzles and Bridge Provide All the Brain Exercise you Need?

This is a question we often get asked in our classes and lectures.

The quick answer is that while recreational activities like crossword puzzles, sudoku, bridge, chess, poker, etc. are all good for you and better than doing nothing, they are usually limited in their range of mental cross-training as well as difficult to control to ensure the right combination of both challenge and novelty.

If you do them often, what you're doing is fun and can't hurt. But it may not be complete. Recent recommendations made by a panel of experts reviewing a poll by the American Society on Aging stated "A single activity, no matter how challenging, is not sufficient to sustain the kind of mental acuity that virtually everyone can achieve."

Using your brain to solve creative challenges is excellent practice and will help slow down the effects of aging. The limitation with your current brain workout program is that it does not have enough variety or novelty to work out all your mental muscles. Have you ever seen the guys in the gym with the buff upper bodies supported by little chicken legs? The same thing can happen in your brain. Just as you cross-train in your physical fitness routine (mixing cardio with strength training and flexibility) to get a balanced workout, you need to cross-train your mental fitness to exercise your brain through motor coordination, emotional understanding, memory, focus and attention, sensory processes, communication, language skills, and mental visualization.

Furthermore, how can you gauge your improvement if you don't have a way to measure it? Using computer software to give you a baseline score, workout routines for your brain, and follow up tests gives you a measure of your improvement. So basically, right now you may be doing a highly focused workout using language and memory but with inconsistent challenge and limited feedback. A structured program should give you assessment, novelty, and performance-based challenge while still being fun. That extra mental stimulation can increase the rate of neurogenesis, or the creation of new neurons and the connections between neurons.

A randomized controlled double-blind study published in August 2006 "demonstrates that intensive, plasticity-engaging training can result in an enhancement of cognitive function in normal mature adults." Challenging cognitive function leads to learning and neurogenesis. So keep doing crosswords and sudoku, especially if you enjoy them, but don't neglect the rest of your brain!

Conclusion: Do activities you enjoy, but be sure to do things that challenge you with new and different types of stimulation.

Anime Figures: The Best Places To Buy Them

Anime is the Japanese cartoon genre that is not just for kids. There are some really great shows that have memorable and loveable characters. These characters are being collected similar to the "treasure troll" craze we had a few years back. If you are looking to get your hands on some of the latest and greatest anime characters read on. Below are tips that will help you discern between a reputable seller and one who only sells knock off items.

Buying bootleg or counterfeit anime figures hurts the industry. Many first timers buy them out of sheer ignorance. The best way to prevent this is to educate the public that the problem exists and teach them what to look for in a legitimate shop.

If a store has the most popular figures around for less than the Manufacturers suggested retail price than you can figure it is a bootlegging outfit. That is not to say that some legitimate shops do not have special sales from time to time. For the most part however, if the price on all the items is way below market value you can safely assume this is a bootleg operation. To find out what the MSRP on a given item is check the website of the original manufacturer.

If the item says made in China or Hong Kong it is not an authentic anime figure. These are sold a lot on ebay. It is best to preorder your figure before it is released. Especially if what you have your heart set to buy is one of the main characters from a popular show. These are sold as quickly as they come in. You may even get a discount for ordering early, that is before the official release date, from some venues.

There are a lot of resale shops online and figure traders. Another way to get that anime figure you want without paying top dollar is to wait for it to go on sale. This is a practice that will probably get you good secondary characters from any of the shows. The best place to get the best anime figures would be Japanese based stores. Check out the Hobby Shop, Ami-Ami and HLJ for the best bargains online. There are a few American shops that offer quality anime figures but the selections are a bit limited. Kid Nemo, Robert's Anime Corner Store and the Big Bad toy Store are worth a look.

As Britain faces up to the problems of a recession which is worse than anything the economy has faced since the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, there is naturally some concern over the prospect of finding work. For anyone who has been left without a job by the collapse of numerous companies and the mass lay-off of employees that has been undertaken by organisations looking to make a saving, there is the prospect of spending a lot of time unemployed. Re-skilling is now of more importance than ever, as people realise that there is every chance that they will not be able to find a job that fits into their area of expertise. Making such changes will not be easy, but it does provide the prospect of improved employability, just when it is most important.

 

At the present time, the security industry in the United Kingdom is under-staffed to the tune of 90,000 positions. This is in comparison with many other industries being unable to take on any more staff and having to make cutbacks. Industries like the automotive and banking sectors are suffering so badly in the recession that in order to keep running they are having to drastically reduce their scope. Anyone with expertise in these sectors is as a result likely to find that their skills are less in demand and any jobs that become available will be highly contested by individuals of equal ability. Even the more skilled members of these sectors will find it hard to get a job.

 

Retraining as a security guard could, then, be the wisest decision for an individual concerned by the current state of things. Security is one of very few industries where qualification may very well lead straight to a job, with the shortage of professionals currently in the sector. With London hosting the Olympics in 2012, there will be a mass influx of visitors to the United Kingdom, from competing athletes to fans of the sports covered, and although London is the main host city the rest of the United Kingdom will also be used for events. This means that there is a need for more security staff in the rest of the country to deal with this influx.

 

Retraining as a security guard with the Olympic Games, Paralympics and other such events in the pipeline means that you can be at the forefront of an industry which will have positions available. The venues currently being built for the Games will still be open and in use after the closing ceremony, and will still require security staff so it is not as though the re-staffing will be followed by major lay-offs.
