I loved watching these four teenagers and a dog driving around the world in their Mystery Machine solving mysterious and frightening cases in evil cities.

These four teenagers are named Fred "Freddie" Jones, the smart and athletic boy; Daphne Blake, the pretty fashioned girl; Velma Dinkley, intellectual and a bit overweight; and Norville "Shaggy" Rogers the fearful beatnik.

At the end of each episode, Velma reveals the explanation of these strange cases; which, finally, are simple scams involving one or several local citizens.

One of the most sympathetic characters of this cartoon is a brown Great Dane. A cheerful, flippant, fearful, greedy talking dog named Scooby-Doo.

Scooby-Doo and Samy are the humorous side of this sinister atmosphere.

Scooby-Doo's characters have been redesigned. The characters have been brought alive; featured by Freddie Prinz Jr. (Shaggy), Sarah Michelle Gellar (Daphne), Linda Cardellini (Velma, who seems having lost weight after visiting my weight loss site), Matthew Lillard (Samy), and the computer technology for Scooby-Doo graphics.

Children and adults still love this cartoon.

Thirty years ago, Halloween did not mean anything in my country but since ten years TV companies organize Halloween themed shows and their first guest is... Scooby Doo.

Halloween is the perfect occasion to wear the Scooby Doo animated serie's costumes.

Here is the necessary material: a dog pattern, brown fabric, black fabric for the black patches.
If you do not have sewing skills, choose a brown turtleneck sweater, brown trousers and a Scooby Doo mask.
Do not forget a turquoise necklace and the golden badge.

Have fun: organize a Scooby Doo themed halloween party and invite lots of ghosts and monsters in order to recreate the Mystery Machine's team atmosphere.

The case for and against cast iron cookware

The use of cast-iron for cooking goes back over 2500 years albeit in Europe countries such as the UK have only used it for about 1000 years after it became popular when folk realised that complete pots with handles could be made using molten metal poured into moulds made out of sand. Originally cast iron pots came with three legs as they were to be used on the open fire.

The Benefits of using cast iron cookware

Cast iron cookware offers many exceptional cooking benefits; hence so many cooks swear by it.
Cast iron is a near perfect heat conductor, heating evenly and consistently;
Cast iron can withstand very high temperatures, which makes it great for searing and frying
Cast iron pots allow precise and sustained cooking temperatures;
When cooking with cast iron heat is spread evenly throughout the pot; there are no hot spots; this makes iron pots great for slow cooking; and
Cured cast iron offers the perfect non-stick surface making it ideal for many dishes where using non stick is a must

Cast iron offers many other more widely based benefits:

It lasts and lasts and lasts and makes a great heirloom;
Cast iron is relatively inexpensive to buy but when seen in the context of its extraordinary longevity it is incredibly cheap;
Cast iron can be used to cook in so many styles hence so many cooks swear by it; for example for use when cooking Jambalaya dishes, stews, soups, cornbread, tortillas and fajitas; and such is its versatility it can be used for frying, searing, baking, deep frying grilling;
Cast iron comes in many shapes and sizes and different formats; be they; griddles, grills, woks, Jambalaya pots, deep fryers, frying pans and Dutch ovens
It can go from stove to oven;
It won’t warp, its tough as old boots and is really easy to clean;
Health benefits arise for those with a deficiency of iron in their blood. A small amount of iron is leached into the food when cooking providing a rely valuable benefit;
Cooking with cast iron cookware is far more fun than with most other cookware; and
When well seasoned cast iron cookware works non stick requiring no additional oil whatsoever so its great for healthy cooking.

Disadvantages of cast iron cookware

For those with excess iron in their blood the leaching of iron from the cookware can be bad;
For those suffering from the inherited metabolic disorder hemochromatosis that affects around one million Americans it should be avoided. Indeed if you have any family with the disease, ask your physician about the transferrin saturation test, which tests for iron excess in the blood;
The food sticks! But if it does this simply means that you haven’t seasoned your cast iron properly because cast iron is naturally and totally non stick when correctly seasoned
If you suffer from joint or stomach pain, fatigue, heart palpitations or impotence, check with your physician.
You can’t put cast iron in the dish washer; but otherwise cleaning it is a breeze
It is not recommended that you boil water using cast iron cookware;
Its not recommended for glass top stoves as it can scratch the surface when moved around;
Cast iron has to be seasoned and if cooking with certain acidic food stuffs such as when cooking using tomato based sauces it’s surface can be affected and need redoing from time to time

Seasoning cast iron cookware

Cast iron must be seasoned to protect the metal from rusting and to provide a non-stick surface. This is a straightforward process which once done shouldn’t need redoing. There are many good articles explaining this process but in summary it comprises of a simple 3 step process:

Cleaning the cast iron cookware back to its original surface;
Applying a layer of fat all over [typically fats high in saturated fats such as: Crisco, Palm oil, Coconut oil and lard]; then,
Heating up the ‘fat covered cookware’ to a high temperature causing the fat to bond to the cast iron.

Thereafter ongoing seasoning occurs as your cooking deposits evermore fat on top of the cured surface, giving it that lovely non stick dark glossy hue that characterises well-seasoned well-aged cast iron cookware.

If your cast iron cookware develops rust spots, scour the rusty areas with steel wool, until all traces of rust are gone then wash, dry and once again repeat seasoning process.

Cleaning cast iron cookware

A lot of nonsense is talked about cleaning cast iron cookware; but the basics are straightforward:

Do not soak them or scrub them with scourers or anything metal;
Avoid strong cleaning products;
Wash with mild soap and water and dry with a paper towel then
Re-apply a thin layer of fat.

Never store food in the cast iron pan as the acid in the food will breakdown the seasoning and take on a metallic flavor

Types of cast iron

There are many brands of plain and enamelled cast iron coming from around the world. Our advice at the Outdoor Cooking Equipment Store is go for the traditional black cast iron as the price differential, given the limited additional benefits of enamelled cast iron does not warrant paying so much more.

Enamelled cast iron also does not offer the benefits of standard cast iron such as the ability to withstand searing heat, the leaching of dietary iron and it never enjoys that beautiful black hue.

What to buy and how to choose

There are many brands from which to choose. We recommend the Bayou Classic brand as the quality is truly exceptional judged against competing brands. When selecting which cast iron cookware to go for consider the following:

The cast iron should have a fine, smooth surface making it ideal for seasoning.
Do not buy cookware that is pitted, uneven, rough or that has any chips or cracks;
High quality cast iron cookware is evenly grey all over and is made in one piece;
Do all you can to get hold of grandmother’s old cast iron cookware as long as it doesn’t have a cracks or chips it will continue to last and last

What Can Be Done To Improve The Dignity Of Elderly In Care Homes?

With people living longer than ever before, the challenge facing many countries, including the UK, is how to make sure that the standard in Care Homes and the treatment of people living in them would meet our own requirements for our loved ones. Relying on others to take care of our loved ones is always a worrying time, so we need to take a long and hard look at how we can improve the dignity of elderly in care homes.

Below, we take a look at the things we feel are most important when it comes to the dignity of the elderly when living in a care home.

Government: Do not depend on government intervention. Anti-aging legislation, emphasising equal rights, particularly in the medical area, yes, but how many elderly in care homes use a postal vote in an election…?

Philosophy: Pursue a philosophy that recognises the service user as a unique individual, doing things with them rather than for them and that respects values and needs even if they differ from one's own.

Leadership: Provide leadership by example of the area managers/senior management of care home groups by visiting the homes to discuss with staff at care assistant level as opposed to care manager level; not only day staff but night staff as well, who often feel isolated. Perhaps some groups need a ‘mystery shopper'.

Staff: Train the care assistant staff who may not have been born in this country, or who may be young, to respect the wishes of the service user. Many residents were borne before the war and may not wish to be called by their first name.

Role reversal: Train the care assistants to imagine themselves elderly and dependent and in pain, and to work out how they would themselves feel. I know someone who imagines the elderly men as soldiers having once defended their country and elderly ladies as twenties flappers or 40's land girls. One should "see" a person as they are or as they were, rather than just the "illness they have".

Whistle blower: Look at how to take advantage of the honest "whistle blower" in the staff without firing the wrongdoer.

Key worker: The role of the ‘key worker' is so important. By involving the key worker in the overall picture of what the resident's needs are when they enter the care home environment we can give that continuing level of care. This is so important in such areas as whether the individual concerned liked their hair to be styled and cut regularly or ensuring their interest in make-up continues. Supervise closely the "key worker" care assistant who is responsible for a resident's needs (no soap….? someone else's underwear…?) and the family purchases which will make the resident's life more comfortable.
Valuing the staff: By ensuring the staff feel valued the service user will be valued, thus raising the level of care and respect for and dignity of the residents. The importance of realisation by families and senior staff that a care assistant's job is often extremely challenging and involves tasks which many would find it hard to do for a member of their family let alone doing it for their fellow human being – and doing these tasks continually day in and day out and not on a ‘one off' basis. We all need to feel loved and needed – whether that is a child in its formative years or an elderly person coming to the end of their lives – or a care assistant carrying out often unpleasant tasks - and respect follows through from being loved and needed.

Reward and thank staff that do a good job. "Care staff need to feel valued".
Train staff to find a common interest with the residents, particularly those with dementia. One resident, who had difficulty in settling and had been in several care homes before her current home, was encouraged to form rhyming phrasing to the carer's names, e.g., Brenda – big spender, Brenda – kind and tender, and it gave her something on which to focus. Another enjoyed talking about their experience as a firefighter during the ‘Blitz' in London's Dockland and it was discovered a member of staff's father had also experienced these events so she could reminisce graphically with this resident.

Orlando Magic - The Early Years

The Orlando Magic officially entered the NBA as an expansion franchise in 1989. Led by a local businessman, Jimmy Hewitt and former Philadelphia 76ers general manager Pat Williams, the Magic hired Matt Guokas as the team's first coach. The inaugural team compiled a record of 18-64 with players including Reggie Theus, Scott Skiles (now current coach of the Chicago Bulls), Terry Catledge, Sam Vincent, Otis Smith (now current general manager of the Magic), and Jerry Reynolds. In the club's first draft in 1989, the Magic chose Nick Anderson with the 11th pick in the first round.

The club's first game was on November 4, 1989, at the Orlando Arena (O-Rena). Despite playing a hard-fought game, the visiting New Jersey Nets won 111- 106. The Magic's first victory came 2 days later, as the Magic defeated the New York Knicks 118-110.

In the 1990 NBA Draft, the Orlando Magic selected Dennis Scott with the fourth overall pick. Scott, known as a sharpshooter, helped the Magic compile a 31-51 record. Combined with the fast-paced energy style of Skiles, who was named the NBA's Most Improved Player at the end of the season, the Magic heralded the NBA's most improved record that season. 1992 was a disappointing season for the Magic, who struggled through a 17-game losing streak.

The club's history was changed dramatically with the 1992 NBA Draft. With the first overall pick, the Magic selected big-man Shaquille O'Neal from Louisiana State University. O'Neal, a 7-1 center, made an immediate impact on the Magic, leading the club to a 41-41 record. The Magic again were the NBA's most improved franchise, and O'Neal garnered All-Star starter status and the Rookie of the Year award. However, the Magic missed that year's playoffs, because they were tied with the Indiana Pacers for the 8th (and final) playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and because the Pacers owned the tiebreaker.

Missing out on the playoffs had a silver lining: despite having the NBA's best non-playoff record (and thereby the least chance of gaining the top draft pick with only one ball in the lottery machine), the Magic once again won the NBA draft lottery. In the draft, the Magic selected Chris Webber, but traded him to the Golden State Warriors for the number three pick, guard Anfernee Hardaway (known as "Penny" Hardaway) and three future first-round draft picks. Prior to the draft, Guokas stepped down as head coach, and Brian Hill was promoted to become the Magic's second coach. Also, General Manager Pat Williams was replaced by John Gabriel.

With the lethal combination of O'Neal and Hardaway, the Magic became a dominant team in the NBA, compiling the first 50 win season in franchise history with a 50-32 record. The Magic were in the playoffs for the first time, ranked the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference. However, the underdog Pacers team swept the Magic 3-0 in the first round, thus ending the Magic's season.

However, in the 1994-95 season, the Magic's sixth season, after acquiring rebounder Horace Grant as a free agent from the Chicago Bulls, Orlando compiled a 57-25 record, best in the East and winning the Atlantic Division title. In the playoffs, the Magic defeated the Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls, and the Indiana Pacers, advancing to the NBA Finals. The Houston Rockets, though, ended Orlando's dream of a championship by sweeping Orlando 4-0 in the Finals to take the crown.

In the 1995-96 season, the Magic again dominated the Eastern Conference and the Atlantic Division with a 60-22 record, led by O'Neal and Hardaway. However, the Magic were seeded number two, behind the amazing 72-10 record the Chicago Bulls accumulated under Michael Jordan. In the playoffs, after the Magic defeated the Detroit Pistons and the Atlanta Hawks, Orlando met the Bulls in the Eastern Conference finals. The combination of Jordan, Scottie Pippen and rebounder Dennis Rodman as well as Toni Kukoc was too much for the Magic, and Orlando was swept 4-0 in the Eastern Conference finals.

In the offseason, in a huge blow to the Magic franchise, O'Neal left as a free agent to the Los Angeles Lakers. However, the Magic still managed to compile a 45-37 record, led by Hardaway, Darrell Armstrong, the team's emotional leader, and newly-acquired free agent Rony Seikaly. In the playoffs, the Magic came close to stunning the heavily favored Miami Heat in the first round, extending the series to a classic game five, even after losing the first two games. In the middle of the season, though, urged by player discontent, management fired coach Brian Hill and named Richie Adubato as interim coach for the rest of the season.

The Magic then hired Chuck Daly to be head coach for the 1997-98 season. In addition, Hall of Famer Julius Erving joined the Magic's front office, giving Orlando immense hope for a successful season. However, the season was hampered by injuries, as Hardaway sat out the majority of the season . Anderson, combined with newly acquired free agent Bo Outlaw, led the team to a respectable 41-41 record, just out of reach of the NBA playoffs. In addition, Rony Seikaly was traded during the season to the New Jersey Nets for three role players and a future draft pick.

In 1998-99, with the acquisition of Matt Harpring and Michael Doleac and a healthy Hardaway and Anderson, the Magic tied for the Eastern Conference's best record in the lockout-shortened season, 33-17. Armstrong again led the team emotionally, winning the NBA's Sixth-Man and Most Improved Player awards. In addition, Orlando also acquired NBA great Dominique Wilkins, along with brother Gerald, who were past their primes but were both still very good. In the playoffs, though, the Magic were seeded number 3 because of tiebreakers and faced the Philadelphia 76ers. The 76ers, led by Allen Iverson, upset the Magic 3-1 in the first round.

In 1999, the Magic, under General Manager John Gabriel, who was later named Executive of the Year, hired rookie-coach Doc Rivers. Gabriel dismantled the previous team trading their only remaining superstar Anfernee Hardaway to the Phoenix Suns for Danny Manning (who never donned a Magic uniform), Pat Garrity and two future draft picks. The Magic were then a team virtually comprised of all no name players and little experience which included team captain Armstrong, Bo Outlaw and a young Ben Wallace, along with Coach Rivers led the Magic to a 41-41 record, barely missing out on the playoffs. At the end of the season Rivers was named Coach of the Year by the NBA. This year was characterized by the slogan "Heart and Hustle", as the team was known for its hard-working style.
