The Best Salmon and Fishing Rod

A lot of steelhead and salmon fisherman are starting to take serious look at the St Croix Wild River fishing rods.  These rods are premium rods that can be found in many boats on rivers in Alaska, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. Heck you can find these rods on just about every lake or river in the US.

One of the first things you'll notice is the craftsmanship with all St Croix rods.  Using quality reel sets, guides and a patented graphite, these rods are extremely sensitive without sacrificing powerful hook sets.  Depending on which series you purchase you can expect to pay from $100 up to $400.  Some of their rods are feather light, and super sensitive.  I know we love to use these rods for fishing for steelhead on the Columbia River.

For steelhead and salmon fisherman you have your choice of these St Croix rods.

What I have noticed recently is the move to longer rods for steelhead/salmon.  As you know these fish are powerful and will not give up quickly.  The longer your rod the easier it is on your arms to land the fish.  I made the mistake recently of using a 8'6" rod and hooked into a 13 pound steelhead.  The normal time it takes to land a smaller fish is less than 5 minutes.  A fish of this size can either come in quickly or they will give you a fight that lasts 10-15 minutes depending on how soft your drag is.

That 8'6" rod is a great rod but it took it's toll on my arms.  I couldn't believe how tired I was after landing that fish.  Had I been using my St Croix noodle rod like I normally do, it wouldn't have been as fatiqued.  

Why was I using the smaller rod in the first place?

I like to fish with two rods to keep my bait in front of the fish longer.  I have one loaded with schrimp and the other fishing.  When I pull in the line, if my schrimp is gone, I cast the other rod out and get my other rod ready for the next time.  Since I don't have 2 noodle rods, I have to use my old rod, so that is why carry two rods.

These steelhead and salmon rods come with a very unique warranty that you truly need to check out on their website. Depending on which series of rod you purchase, you will either receive a limited lifetime warranty, 5 year warranty or a one year warranty.  

The next time you are at your local sporting goods store, go visit the rod section and take a look at these rods.  They are light, have two coats of slow drying "flex coat" and they use a patented IPC and ART technology that allows the rod to be smaller, but strong enough for any salmon you can catch.  

If you are going to compare these rods to other rods, my best advice is to put a reel on both rods and then play around with them. You can feel the difference and for your next birthday or Christmas ask for these rods, you won't be disappointed.

Tiger Reserve in India part 4

Namdapha National Park

Situated in Arunachal Pradesh, 150 km from Miao, Namdapha National park stretches across an area of 1985 sq km. Being one of the largest national parks in north-east region, this park is situated on the Indo-Burma border. This park mainly covers high altitudes of up to 4500 m. This park had a typical stock of flora and fauna. The lush green tropical rain forests are the breeding ground of a variety of animals and birds. Best time to visit this park is in the months of October and April.

Pakhui National Park

Located in East Kameng district in Arunachal Pradesh, Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary is spread across 862 km. This park lies in the headquarters of Seijusa in the southwestern side of Arunachal Pradesh. Kememng River flows on its western side, Pakke River in the eastern side and Assam surrounds it on the south. The total area of Pakke Tiger Reserve was actually the area of Pakke Reserve forest. It was declared as Camo Sanctuary in 1977. in 2002 though  it was declared as Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary and finally declared as a reserve in 2004 under the Project Tiger scheme. The sanctuary houses a spectacular range of wildlife species like leopard, tiger, jackal, clouded leopard, fishing cat, jungle cat, wild dog, wild boar, bison, sambar and hog deer, elephant, barking deer, flying squirrel and rhesus macaque. The best time to visit this place is between the months of October and April.

Nagarjunasagar- Srisailam

This is one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in India situated 29 km away from Macherla and is spread across Kurnool, Guntur, Mahaboobnagar, Prakasam, and Nalgonda districts. This park spans an area of 3568 sq km. Surrounded by Nallamalai hills in south and Krishna River on the northern side, this sanctuary gets its name from the reservoir Nagarjunasagar. The sanctuary houses one of the oldest geological structures called ‘Archaean’ which is believed to be 2000 million years old. The major wildlife attractions here are Tiger, Leopard, Sloth Bear and Hyena. Tigers are extremely nocturnal and rarely seen here. Once home to 100 tigers, the tiger population in the park has fallen drastically. Additional animal species spotted here are Spotted Deers, Mouse Deers, Sambhars, Wolves, Foxes, Chousingha Nilgai, Tree Shrews, Rayels, Wild Boars, Indian Giant Squirrels, Black Bucks, Jackals, Crocodiles, Wild Dogs, Sloth Bear, Panthers and Tigers. The best time to visit the park is between the months of October and June.

Valmiki National Park

Located in the West Champaran district of Bihar, Valmiki National Park covers an area of 335.64 sq km out of the 800sq. km of the Valmiki Sanctuary. This is the 18 Tiger Reserve, declared so in the year 1990 and ranks fourth in the density of tiger population. Surrounded by Royal Chitwan National Park of Nepal in the north and the river Gandak in the west, this park gets its name from the Valmiki Ashram located in the forests of Chitwan national Park. The forest has dry Sal, moist deciduous trees containing reed beds and wet grasslands. The reserve inhabits tiger, various species of deer, serow, python, peafowl, leopard, wolf, hyenas, Indian civets, sloth bear, leopards, Jungle cats, etc. Animals like One horned rhinoceros and Indian bison are often found migrating from Chitwan to Valmikinagar. You can visit the park anytime of the year.

Palamau National Park

Palamau Sanctuary can pride itself in the fact that it is the ground for the world’s first tiger census. Situated 140 km west of Ranchi it is one of the best places to see wild elephants.  Spread in a total of 1026 sq km the forest here are rich with sal, teak trees and bamboo groves. It is believed there are 37 tigers, 62 leopards, 210 elephants and 249 bison in the park. The sanctuary has 200 villages where 8 local tribes live.  The wildlife found here is wolf, sloth bear, deer, leopard, python, peafowl, sambars, nilgais, leopards, hyenas, Indian civets, jungle cats, hog deer and wild dogs. The best time to visit the park and sanctuary is between the months of October and June.

Bhadra National Park

Located in the tropical green jungles of Chikmagalur district 275 km from Bangalore,  Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is spread in an area of 492.46 sq km. Initially the sanctuary was called Jagara Valley Game Reserve and was declared as the 25th Tiger Reserve in 1998. Bhadra flows in the sanctuary hence giving it its name. The sanctuary is well known as Muthodi Wildlife Sanctuary it is a great place to site tigers, Indian Bison, stripped Hyena and the flying lizard gliding in the woods. The park is dwelling place for more than 250 species of birds. The exceptional wildlife includes gaur, sloth bear, sambar, barking deer, mouse deer, wild boar, bonnet macaque, slender loris and Malabar giant squirrel. Best time to visit this place is between the months of June and October.

Front vs. Rear Wheel Drive

One decision that is always faced when buying a new car is, "Should I get rear wheel or front wheel drive?" Well, here are some things to consider when answering that question. Most cars today are designed with front wheel drive as they're typically safer, where you'll find that commonly sports & race cars are packing rear wheel drive.

First things first, if your car is front wheel drive, this means the engine powers the front wheels, so the front wheels is what powers the vehicle along. Rear wheel drive is when the engine powers only the rear wheels causing them to push the vehicle along. The main difference is the fact that front wheel drive is easier to handle, especially for beginner drivers. Rear wheel drive can be a bit more difficult as the car tends to over turn when cutting sharp corners, that is, unless you specifically know how to handle these vehicles. However, with front wheel drive, the car can do the opposite and under turn if taking a corner too sharp. In the end though, front wheel drive cars are easier to control than the over turning of rear wheel drive.

Another good thing about front wheel drive is that the engines tend to be smaller, giving more room for the inside of the car and giving the car less weight to pull, thus giving you better gas mileage. This is due to the fact that in a rear wheel drive car, an extra engine compartment is usually installed in the back of the car, where of course it is used to power and push the back wheels along. The placement of the engine in the front of the car also helps with traction especially in rainy or snowy conditions, as the increased front weight helps give the tires traction on the road. However, if trying to go up a hill, front wheel drive doesn't provide as much traction, as there is nothing pushing the car from the back. This is where a rear wheel drive car can become more helpful. Another bad thing is that the CV joints in front wheels tend to wear out quicker because there is more weight consistently being applied to the front of the car and those two front tires. The universal joints used in rear wheels do last longer as the entire weight of the car isn't always bearing down on them while driving.

As you can see, both front and rear wheel drive have their pros and cons, but over all front wheel drive is the safest way to go; especially for those less experienced drivers.
