The King Post Truss: The Truss of Many Benefits
The King Post truss is generally found in wooden frame buildings where large spaces are needed while not using column. The King Post truss is one of the best trusses to use in architecture because the design is simple, it takes less timber or metal, therefore less money, and they're incredibly stable. The most common type of King Post truss found nowadays supports roofs of small office buildings and occasionally in some older, ranch- style homes with low roofs and no attic space. These roof trusses are often mass-produced and can be found in any older barns with enormous interiors. Mortar is often used to construct these trusses as well. The King Post truss was invented to help support bridges with shorter spans. More than likely, the King Post truss was used with small, open bridges, such as those you would find over a small body of water.
The Details
The King Post truss is characterized by two diagonal pieces of wood or metal whose ends are stabilized on the end of a chord above the ground, or in the case of a bridge, water. The center of this chord is hung from the Kings Post. The weight on the bridge is then put onto the end of the chord through particular braces. King Post braces are often in compression and squeezed by the weight put on the Kings Post. Because of this tension, as long as the wood or metal is stronger, the Kings Post truss will make sure the bridge stands. Because this truss has a vertical beam in the middle of the two diagonal beams, whether they are wood or metal, the structure is easily supported.
Oftentimes, trusses are sometimes used to simply hold a shingled structure on the roof of a building, such as a barn. The King Post truss is a very elegant looking, yet simple truss. It is easy to construct, takes less materials and is all around cheaper. If you're looking for a classy truss to be the newest addition to your house, the King truss is a great option. Because of the two diagonal beams, the King Post truss is easy to span on roofs anywhere from 20 to 40 feet. Another great thing about the King Post truss is that while giving the building a large roof span, it is able to give the building an extremely spacious ground floor and sometimes second floor if the roof on which the King Post truss is built is high enough.
